Notes on Education:

The children's education is central to the ethos of H.E.L.P. Zimbabwe. We believe that education is the only bona fide gateway out of poverty and is the only permanent inheritance a child can have. All children in the care of the charity are therefore educated, without interuption, to their highest potential. To assist the school staff, some basic resources are provided where possible. Since 1992, The following provisions have been donated by well wishers through the charity.

  • a library with over 7 tonnes of books and a library admin course for staff
  • a fully functional weather station
  • two microscopes
  • Science kits
  • boxes ot art brushes and paints used to paint the school logo below.

The older of our Supported children in the area go to Makomba Secondary School located about 12 km south of chatsworth in the coutryside. H.E.L.P. Zimbabwe has shared a histroty with this and its sister primary school on the same grounds. It is easier to source learning resources for the children and keep them in one place. Makomba had the first school library within 90 km radius. The next school with a library was in Masvingo city. Makomba library was used by learners from as far away as Harare.

This photo wa taken in October 2008 and shows some of the children supported through education by H.E.L.P. Zimbabwe. The children are placed with relatives or friends of the families, being people they knew before the need for placement arose. This gives them the least traumer. The school has an efficient counselling service for those children who need it.

The school Logo reads "Striving For Excellence".

The history of the school bears witness to the sentiment of the logo. There are children who have attended at this humble shool, who have found their way to higher institutions in Zimbabwe and abroad. It has given the children good role models to follow.

The donations from well wishers have help to keep these children in school against the odds over the years.

The photo shows the children looking healthy. The charity assists in food importation from South Africa to ensure that the children have the basic of foodstuffs. Companies such as Sparrow Logistics give significant discounts for transportation.

In 1999 a Well wisher who had visited the school in 1998, donated this diesel generator to the school through the charity. It was meant specifically for the children to study in the evening and the staff (who live at the school) to have longer evenings. The national grid has since been installed and the generator is only used for backup purposes.

Adult education centres on development of self-help projects. When income in the home or the community increases, the children get look after better, and more life skills get passed on to the children. The charity has a number of edult projects based ion simple technologies and local resources. School leavers are encouraged to work in groups to minimise the effects of resource shortages.

How you can help in the children's education:

  • USD$5 per month can keep one child in school.
  • Donating unwanted but functional equipment, sewing machines, tents, lab equipment, books, etc, can enhance their learning or help local enterprise.
